Last week, Trustur, a borderless digital passport developed by FloodGates Limited, received the prestigious award for the best democracy-affirming startup in Africa at the Africa Tech4Democracy Venture Day in Cape Town, South Africa. This event, organized as part of the IE University Center for the Governance of Change initiative in partnership with the U.S. Department of State and with the strategic support of Microsoft, brought together startups dedicated to developing technologies that reinforce democratic principles and values.
Trustur’s recognition stems from its innovative approach in providing users with a verifiable and secure digital identity, which eliminates the need for physical IDs and long KYC forms. Accepted into the Startup Wise Guys Acceleration Program’s inaugural African batch, Trustur is set to integrate with financial institutions in Ghana, beginning with 126 rural banks. This initiative aligns with Trustur’s overarching goal of deploying an interoperable digital ID experience across Africa, aiming to build an ecosystem of connected services.
The solution’s contribution to democratizing access to digital services and fostering societal inclusion stood out among the other finalists, including deaftouch, Legal Standpoint, Ongea na Demokrasia, and Uamuzi. By streamlining access to digital services and empowering individuals with secure digital identities, Trustur is at the forefront of promoting democratic values and fostering inclusive growth.
This award not only acknowledges Trustur’s impact in advancing democratic ideals but also highlights its potential to drive meaningful change across the continent. The event also featured keynote speaker Melvyn Lubega, moderator Carlos Luca de Tena Piera, and esteemed jury members and speakers who contributed to the vibrant discussions surrounding entrepreneurship and democratic innovation.
